How many steps a day to lengthen your life?

.

Updated: Jun 3, 2022

Smart watches have gained popularity in recent years, and a suggested goal to aim for has been 10,000 steps per day. This number was thought to be picked at random by a Japanese marketing agency. But what does the latest medical research say?

A study in 2019 of 16000 older women found that there was a large drop in death rates associated when an average of 4500 steps per day was reached, and the optimal number was 7500 steps1.

A metanalysis (grouped results from several research studies) has now been published2. This has shown a progressive reduction of risk of death among adults aged 60 years and older with increasing number of steps per day until 6000–8000 steps per day, and among adults younger than 60 years until 8000–10 000 steps per day. The reduction in death rates between the higher step count walkers and lower step count walkers was 40-53%.

Walking at least 8000 steps per day for most employees therefore is the suggested goal. If your employees are desk-based for most of their day, then encouraging walking during their breaks may be helpful for their mental and physical health.
