Helping employees with sleep problems

.

Updated: Jun 3, 2022

Up to a third of UK adults are reported to have problems with insomnia. Lack of sleep can cause workplace accidents, low mood, poor concentration and attention to detail, and irritable behaviour towards colleagues and customers.

Dr Cryer’s MFOM research project was on the topic of how night shift working can be associated with poor sleep patterns, fatigue, and worsening of diabetes, heart disease, epilepsy and depression.

There are many medical causes of poor quantity or quality of sleep. If an employee complains that this is a problem for them, then seeing their GP to check for an underlying medical cause should be suggested. Common causes are depression, menopause, medication side-effects, and thyroid conditions.

The National Institute of Health and Care Executive (NICE) recommends a CBT app called Sleepio as a cost saving option for treating insomnia and insomnia symptoms in primary care, as an alternative to sleep hygiene or sleeping pills.

If your employees are having difficulties working effectively and safely due to fatigue or sleep problems, please temporarily restrict their duties and ask them to inform the DVLA (if there are safety concerns such as driving or using machinery) and contact us for occupational health advice.
